Always one to court sidelong glances, Philippe Starck transforms people's memory of long-accustomed things with his ideas which were never there. In the eternal interplay of material, form and content lies the infinity of his creative energy, and he draws on abundant resources, always seeking things as yet unknown, unforeseen. In the same way that the letter X in maths stands for the unknown quantity, here it symbolizes a completely new design dimension as Philippe Starck again tackles the subject of the bathroom.

Is it luxury, elegance, esprit? No, Starck X.

With Starck X, Philippe Starck, the grand master of international design, has created for Hansgrohe a category in its own right, with no reference points, no models. Nothing in this series is conventional and ordinary. Neither the consistently rectangular ceramic, nor the gushing jet flowing out of the sculpturally elegant, perfectly straight-lined taps, nor the "overflowing" bath: Starck X maximizes the minimalism. Hansgrohe Axor provides a completely new and surprising basic form in the tap sector: even, smooth surfaces in chrome correspond to the pure geometry of the body of the tap, which does not permit any free forms whatsoever.

The initiative for Starck X was provided by Philippe Starck himself. Unique and inimitable - these were the features which should make the new concept in bathrooms stand out from previous bathroom designs. Together with Hansgrohe Axor and Duravit, Starck created a haven in the middle of our hectic life and our noisy world, where we can relax far away from the stress of the daily routine and square ourselves with the world in the true sense of the word. It is a place where the luxury of peace and the contemplation of cleansing rituals settle on spirit, soul and body without detours. The ubiquitous becomes magical; the world of water reveals itself through sculptural bathroom objects whose cubic clear forms promise disentanglement instead of entanglement.

A suitable setting for water, the precious elixir of life, this ever-mysterious substance, the origin of human life, linked to us by our very own experiences. Starck X invites us to accept the fascination of water, to submerge ourselves in a different world and so experience the bathroom in a new light. Is it fantasy? Is it excess? No, Starck X.

With the Axor Starck X design collection, Philippe Stark, the "enfant terrible" of international design, is once again succeeding in astounding. The taps provide a new way of embodying the search for the essential, the critical yet at the same time the new, the surprising. It is the sculptural, almost monumental elegance and the touch of extravagant luxury which make the collection unique. Its ability to do this without being in the least ostentatious is due to the clear and calm design contours which are reduced to the essentials. This is dominated by the cuboid - the perfectly geometrically-cut basic form which is repeated again and again in various guises, its precision bestowing lightness and an almost special character on the design. Indeed, this field of conflict between reduced design contours with no frills and the simultaneous tangible opulent excess becomes the outstanding characteristic of the whole collection.

The Collection

With 16 products in total, all in polished chrome, the new Axor Starck X collection of design taps opens up a broad design scope for widely differing individual visions of bathrooms.

Washbasin

The Axor Starck X single lever washbasin mixer with its sculptural yet uncompromising straight lines thus sets significant trends in the bathroom. The even, smooth finish in polished chrome matches the pure geometry of the body of the tap, which does not permit any free forms whatsoever. Here, the highest standard of design and manufacturing quality encounter perfectly worked surfaces and precisely defined edges. The wide tap which hides the view of its base seems to hover freely above the sink like a plateau.

The water flow also breaks with convention: the water gushes luxuriously into the washbasin as if from a crevice in a rock, so that the ritual character of washing yourself is again made something which you consciously experience and becomes manifest in the true sense of the word.

Innovative technology always lies behind the Axor Starck X range of taps. As an example, the new single lever mixers use a joystick cartridge which is freely moveable in all directions, making it child's play to use and hence making the lever extremely user-friendly.

Unequally even more voluminous is the appearance of the wall-mounted model of the single lever washbasin mixer. At first glance, a compact cuboid governs its appearance and endows it with an almost monumental elegance. It is broken up by the elegant, slim, cylindrical spout and the straightforward, clear shape which frees the tap of any suspicion of wanting to impress with its ostentatiousness.
